One of Asia’s largest slums is luring shoppers with the Internet of Things

Dharavi is one of Asia’s largest slums but an initiative, which is part of the Google IoT Research Award Pilot, is bringing the IoT to this 535-acre site.

vendors in this city-within-a-city are getting help from the IoT. Using 30 beacon devices provided by Google, a group of researchers from the Industrial Design Centre (IDC) at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, along with researchers from Swansea University in the UK, is creating a “physical web” connecting different shops in Dharavi’s markets

Amazon Alexa in hot-tub murder case

Amazon Echo

In a first of its kind investigation, it has recently been revealed that Amazon was served with a search warrant in a murder case in November 2015. Detectives wanted to learn what an Amazon Echo device in the home of the victim had potentially heard during the crime.

Investigators in the Victor Collins case argue that since an Amazon Echo is always listening, the device found on the home’s kitchen counter may have picked up conversations that could be crucial to cracking the case.

Project Brillo is rebranded as Android Things

Project Brillo rebranded Android Things

Google has announced changes to its Internet of Things platform. They have recently launched a developer preview of Android Things, which is an updated and rebranded version of their Brillo IoT operating system which was unveiled in 2015.

Google has released a preview of the software, a bare-bones version of Android for connected light bulbs and door locks. It also announced plans for creating a simpler protocol for linking those devices to the cloud.

The iconic BT Tower in London now forms part of the expanding Things Connected network that was launched by Digital Catapult in September 2016 using LoRaWAN technology, becoming the highest building in the world to host an Internet of Things (IoT) base station at a height of 180 metres.
